GOLDEN TWP. — A 36-year-old Kentwood man who was airlifted following a crash at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes ORV area Wednesday, July 29, suffered broken bones in both arms and both legs, and one leg was injured so severely that it had no pulse Wednesday night, said Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon, July 30.

A pulse was established in Eric Westover’s severely-injured leg Thursday morning, Mast said. “They reconstructed enough tissue to establish a pulse.”

He is being treated at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Mast said.

Westover was driving a 2001 Honda 250 dirt bike Wednesday afternoon when he collided head-on with a 2006 Jeep driven by a 44-year-old Traverse City man. OCP was initially told that the bike hit the back of the Jeep, but Mast said today that it was a head-on crash. The bike and the Jeep crested a hill at the same time and crashed. The bike hit the Jeep’s front bumper, and Westover was thrown into the cab area of the Jeep, Mast said. “It was a horrible scene,” Mast said. “There was a lot of blood loss.”

The driver of the Jeep was not injured.
