BENONA TWP. — A Shelby man operating a Yamaha motorcycle suffered a broken leg during a collision with a pickup truck on Buchanan Road near 16th Avenue Thursday, July 23, at approximately 5:15 p.m., according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

A Shelby woman riding on the Yamaha suffered a minor leg injury, and the male driver of the Chevy Silverado pickup was not injured in the “low-speed collision” near the Cherry Point Farm and Market, said OCSO Deputy Donnie Hansen.

The pickup was westbound when it crossed the centerline due to “cutting the corner too sharp,” Hansen said, when it collided with the northbound motorcycle.

The ages and the names of those involved in the accident were not immediately available, but Hansen said the couple on the motorcycle were likely in their mid-50s to early-60s. Both were transported to a local hospital, likely Mercy Health Lakeshore Campus in Shelby.

It was not immediately known if any traffic citations will be issued.

Shelby-Benona Fire Department and Oceana County EMS were also dispatched to the scene.

Shortly after the crash, Hart Area Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire on northbound US-31 north of Shelby Road, where smoke was visible along the roadway. The fire was quickly extinguished.
