Flags to be lowered Friday to honor fallen Navy SEAL.

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder today ordered U.S. flags on all state buildings and within the state Capitol complex to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, May 8, in honor of Navy SEAL and Michigan native Brett Allen Marihugh, who died from complications following a training accident Sunday, April 26.

“Brett’s passing is a reminder to all about the great sacrifices our servicemen and women make for us on a daily basis to ensure our safety and freedom,” Snyder said. “We join Brett’s family in mourning their loss and recognizing his selfless dedication to our state and nation.”

Special Warfare Operator 1^st Class, Marihugh entered the Navy in December 2006, completing basic underwater demolition/SEAL training in Coronado, California in October 2007.

Prior to becoming a Navy SEAL, Marihugh served in the Marine Corps.from 1999-2003. Between his time with the Marines and the Navy, Marihugh worked as a deputy for the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Marihugh was a trained medic and received multiple awards during his time in the military, including the Bronze Star. A service honoring his life is scheduled for Saturday, May 9. He was 34 years old.

This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Saturday, May 9.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
