SHELBY TWP. — An attached residential garage at 3692 S.Water Rd. received “significant interior damage” Friday afternoon, Dec. 5, said Shelby Cpt. Warren Herring, but no one was injured and no vehicles were parked inside it.

Homeowner Lisa Wyns was at work in Hart at about noon Friday when her daughter Katie Anderson called her to tell her she heard on her dad’s emergency scanner that the garage was on fire. Katie’s dad, Jeff Anderson, is a Shelby firefighter, Wyns said, shelby fire 2but he was not at the scene because he was at work.

A neighbor apparently saw that the garage was on fire and called 911, Wyns said. Fire crews from Shelby-Benona, Ferry and Grant Township battled the blaze, and Oceana EMS was on standby. Hart Area Fire Department was called in for standby at the Shelby station.

Crews had the fire extinguished within an hour and it did not spread to the attached house. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and it is under investigation, Herring said.

Wyns said she was fortunate that the Harley Davidson motorcycles that she and her boyfriend own were parked inside another garage on her property behind the garage that burned. Although, their Harley leathers were stored in the garage and burned.

Another house on Wyns’ property located behind garage that caught fire Friday received minor damage in a blaze two years ago caused by a wood stove, she said.
