Oceana Foundation creates nonprofits wish lists for Giving Tuesday

November 20, 2014

Com FdnSHELBY — The giving season is soon to be upon us, starting off with a day of thanks. Quickly following are two days for getting deals — Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Now, we have Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, Dec. 2, people from around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

In preparation for the giving season and to offer a different hometown option, the Community Foundation for Oceana County surveyed area nonprofits about specific near-term projects and purchases that will only be possible if enough financial support can be raised. A total 21 nonprofits responded with items that were divided into three categories: those costing less than $500, $500-$1,500, and $1,500 or more. Wishes included a wide variety of needs such as educational puzzles, warm winter bedding, free Thanksgiving dinners, bibles/devotional books, storage boxes, office furniture, memo boards, even a Dogipot pet station.

“Anyone can help,” said Foundation Executive Director Tammy Carey. “We’ve posted these ‘wish lists’ at oceana foundation to help get out the word. These are projects or purchases that the organizations are ready to implement soon. This is perfect for donors who want their financial gifts to have a positive impact right away.”

The Foundation initially developed the wish lists to share with donors who hold advised funds within the Foundation, but decided to share them more broadly with the community in connection with Giving Tuesday.

“We urge everyone to check out the wish lists and contact that organization directly if they see something they wish to support,” added Carey. “Just make sure you tell them you saw their need posted on the Foundation website.” If you have any questions about establishing a fund or giving towards a wish, call the Foundation office at 231-861-8335.
