Cuffed suspect escapes police chief

HESPERIA — A handcuffed 22-year-old Hesperia man who was under arrest on outstanding Ottawa County warrants escaped from Hesperia Police Chief Dale Gibbs at the Hesperia Police Department Thursday afternoon, Oct. 9, according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

Gibbs could not immediately be reached for comment, and updates to this story will be posted as they become available.

The suspect was arrested in the 200 block of McLaren Street in the village limits, according to the OCSO. He was somehow able to escape from the police department following his arrest. OCSO, the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department, the Hart post of the Michigan State Police, and the NCSO Canine Unit were called to the scene at 3:10 p.m. to track him down. The suspect has been lodged in the Newaygo County Jail and is likely being charged with escape.

Pursuant to MCL 750.197A, a charge of escape from lawful custody is punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
