HESPERIA — Two Hesperia Community Schools’ teachers have teamed up to organize a fun and fashionable road race this Saturday.
The community-centered Red Carpet Run/Walk, begins at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to wear fun, colorful but easy-to-move-in, formal wear. “Remember when the bride said, ‘You can absolutely wear that again,’ here is your chance,” said high school teacher and race co-organizer Jennifer Sherburn.
Sherburn and Louise Troughton, who is the new varsity cross country coach, both acknowledged the need for community-building activities in Hesperia.
“The amount of community support, sponsorship and donations have been amazing and heartwarming,” said Troughton. Ed’s Orchard Market and Bob’s Drugs are primary sponsors, and almost every Hesperia business has contributed financial support or gifts for the evening’s raffle. Proceeds will benefit the school’s cross country program and student council.
A finish over the red carpet will highlight the event, as 90 feet of red fabric will cover the scenic dam walkway behind Ed’s Orchard Market in downtown Hesperia. Assistant cross country Coach Pat Broton designed the 5K race course, which routes participants through downtown to begin the race. Top finishers will receive medals, but the focus of the event will likely be the fashion awards. Awards include the Most Taffeta, Sparkliest, Most Colorful Formal Wear, Sharp Dressed Man and Cutest Prince and Princess.
