GRANT TWP – A seatbelt saved the life of a victim of a serious car crash yesterday, said Michigan State Police Trooper Aaron Tubergen of the Hart post this morning.

Jaws of Life was called to extract the driver – a man in his 20s – who was trapped inside the vehicle, the trooper said. The injured man was taken from the scene to the Grant Township Hall, where an Aeromed helicopter landed to take him to Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The accident, which is under investigation, occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Cleveland Road, east of Oceana Drive. A person called 911, reporting that a vehicle was lying on the driver’s side with the front up against a tree, Tubergen said.

In addition to the seatbelt, the vehicle’s airbag was deployed.

Grant Township Rescue, Oceana Emergency Medical Services and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene.

With the high-traffic holiday weekend coming up, Tubergen stressed the importance of wearing seatbelts. “In this case, the seatbelt saved his life,” he said.
