BENONA TOWNSHIP — Shelby-Benona, Hart and Grant Township fire departments battled a pole barn fire that ignited from a fifth-wheel camper trailer fire at 8891 West Shelby Road near 24th Avenue Wednesday, June 23, around 4:45 p.m.
Shelby-Benona Fire Department was initially called to the scene for the camper trailer fire, which then spread to the nearby pole barn. The other two departments were dispatched when the fire hit the structure.
“Initially it was just Shelby; asked Hart for a tanker; then upgraded it to an engine; and then requested a full assignment,” said Shelby Fire Chief Jack White.
A pontoon boat parked near the camper trailer and an above-ground swimming pool were also damaged.
It is not immediately known what started the blaze, and Chief White called a fire investigator to the scene.
The pole barn received damage, but it is not a total loss, said White. A nearby house was spared from damage.
Before firefighters could clear the scene, they were dispatched to a grass fire near Lake Michigan in Claybanks Township in the windy conditions.
No other information was immediately available.
