HART — A 33-year-old Hart man convicted of assault with intent to commit harm less than murder was sentenced to 15 months to 10 years in prison in 27th Circuit Court Monday, July 16, but he may be allowed to participate in the Special Alternative Incarceration (SAI) or “boot camp” program if the Michigan Department of Corrections allows it.
Jared Theodore Greiner, of 1370 W. Monroe Rd., has a long adult criminal history including five felonies and 22 misdemeanor convictions, as well as a lengthy juvenile record, stated Judge Robert D. Springstead.
Greiner’s plea agreement called for nine months in jail, but he preferred a prison term so he can pursue boot camp, said his attorney Terry Shaw.
“I’m not opposed boot camp if the Michigan Department of Corrections deems it appropriate,” said Judge Springstead. “There is no guarantee you’re going to get it.”
Sentencing guidelines in the case are five to 23 months, the judge said.
“We’ve tried everything we can at a county level. Those efforts have not been effective.”
Greiner received credit for 83 days served in jail.
“You can see in the front row that there is a number of juveniles,” the judge said to Greiner. The court system brings in groups of juvenile offenders occasionally to watch circuit court proceedings in an effort to teach the young offenders what they could experience if they continue down the wrong path.
“Do you have any words of wisdom for things to avoid?” the judge asked Greiner.
“Drinking can get you in a lot of trouble,” Greiner told the juveniles. “It can sneak up on you, and it can get you where I am.”
Judge Springstead also asked another defendant, Matthew Gutierrez, to provide some advice to the juveniles. “Stay in school and listen to your parents,” Gutierrez said. He also warned them about the pitfalls of peer pressure
