SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A Lansing couple escaped injury after their camper rolled over and their pickup truck ended up on top of the guardrail on southbound US 31 near Hayes Road Tuesday afternoon, July 4.
The 12:50 p.m. crash slowed heavy holiday traffic on the highway for hours, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.
The driver, a 41-year-old Lansing man, told police that a gust of wind caused his travel trailer to begin fishtailing.
“He stated that he tried speeding up to pull out of the fishtail, but there was a vehicle in front of him so he couldn’t. The travel trailer spun out of control and forced the truck into the guardrail on two different occasions. The travel trailer overturned and the truck ended up on top of the guardrail,” states the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.
The camper was a 2011 North Country Trailer, and the truck was a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.
Both the driver and his 28-year-old female passenger were wearing their seat belts.
