STONY LAKE — A 2004 full-size Chevrolet pickup truck ignited in flames on Scenic Drive near Camp Miniwanca right after the truck pulled a boat out of Stony Lake Friday, Sept. 23, at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The pickup truck was totally destroyed in the fire, but the Master Craft boat that was pulled out of the water on a trailer was not damaged, said truck and boat owner Mike Deen, who is the executive director of Camp Ao-Wa-Kiya in Stony Lake, which is a Christian youth camp.
No one was injured in the fire. Deen said he and his son, Cody, had just pulled the boat out of the water for the summer season when “the brakes started ‘squishing’ and then smoke came out,” he said.
The pair tried to put the fire out with fire extinguishers, but the flames were too powerful, Deen said. The truck, which was used for camp activities, is insured, he said.
Scenic Drive was closed to traffic in the vicinity of the fire. Shelby-Benona Fire Department and the Michigan State Police responded to the scene.
