ROTHBURY — A 34-year-old Hesperia man died early Tuesday morning, April 26, after jumping from a moving vehicle on Winston Road near Bartlett Road.
The man, whose name is not being released pending full notification of family members, jumped from the vehicle following a disagreement with his 33-year-old wife, said Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office. The couple was at a party, and the man wanted to return but the wife did not, so he jumped from the vehicle, Mast said.
Sheriff’s deputies, Grant Township Rescue and Oceana EMS responded at 4:33 a.m. to a report of a man lying unresponsive next to the road.
The man suffered severe head injuries and died in the ambulance en route to the hospital, Mast said.
While the man was being treated at the scene, a motorist pulled up and identified herself as the man’s wife. She said they were riding together and left a party. She told deputies they had an argument in the car and the man said he was going back to the party, and then he jumped out.
Mast said the wife told deputies she went on a couple stops then came back to the scene where she found emergency crews working on her husband. Mast said that she told deputies that she stopped to check on her children, who were being watched by a grandparent, and that she stopped at Wesco for pizza.
The man’s body has been sent for an autopsy, but his injuries appear to be consistent with a fall from a moving vehicle, Mast said.
The wife was arrested for operating while intoxicated, and the case has been forwarded to the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Her name is not being released until she has been arraigned.
The man previously resided in Rothbury, Mast said.
