HART – Daryl Eugene Essex, 32, of 5378 N. 88th Ave., Hart, was sentenced to two consecutive prison terms in 27th Circuit Court Monday for first-degree home invasion and felony firearms.
Essex was arrested last March following multiple break-ins in Oceana and Mason counties. He was initially charged with 22 felonies, including breaking and entering, home invasion, larceny of firearms, felon in possession of firearm and habitual offender.
Essex is also awaiting charges in Mason County. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office charged him Tuesday with felonies of safe breaking, first-degree home invasion, larceny of firearms, felony firearms and habitual offender, fourth conviction. A preliminary exam is set for July 2 at 11:15 a.m. in 79th District Court in Ludington.
Jewelry, TVs, guns, money and other valuables were stolen. Detectives at the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office reviewed the property taken in by several pawn shops and gold recycling businesses.
Essex was in possession of several stolen items and tools that could be used in breaking and entering when he was arrested during a traffic stop.
He was sentenced Monday to four to 20 years with the Michigan Department of Corrections for the first-degree home invasion count. That term will run consecutively to the felony firearms count, for which he received a two-year prison term. Essex has been lodged in the Oceana County Jail for 101 days, and he received credit for time served.
He was also ordered to pay $8,588 in restitution, along with $266 in fines and costs.
One count of receiving and concealing guns and one count of larceny of a firearm were dismissed.
